Obtaining an ID card for the first time

  1. Present documents that proves your name, date of birth, identity and lawful presence in the United States.
  2. You will also need to present your Social Security number or show your original, non-laminated Social Security card
  3. Applicants must also provide proof of address. Proof of address is anything that shows your name and current residential address such as vehicle registration, check book, bank statement, utility bill, rent agreement, pay stub, school record, medical record, etc. Minors under 21 years old may use their parents drivers license or ID card if the address on the license or ID card is current.
  4. Pay the ID fee.


Obtaining a Driver's License

  1. Prepare your identification documents.
  2. Schedule a drive test appointment. Note: You do not have to do this if you have completed a driving test in a driving school.
  3. Bring your valid instruction permit, proof of address and other documents you will need to present to obtain a driver's license.

Residents of Colorado may hold a Colorado drivers license or Colorado ID card - not both.

ID Fees:

  • ID card (under 60 years old): $10.50
  • ID card (over 60 years old): Free


Driver's License: $21.00 ($23.00 if you have a motorcycle endorsement)

To be issued a Colorado Driver's License or Identification Card you must prove the following elements:

  • Your full legal name
  • Identity
  • Age
  • Lawful presence in the United States

You must also provide your social security number and proof of residential address.

  • Driver's license offices only accept cash or checks - no credit or debit cards. Please plan accordingly.
  • You must provide enough documentation to prove identity, age, name, and lawful presence.
  • Each document must meet the following minimum requirements:
    • Certified originals
    • Certified amended originals
    • True copies certified by the issuing agency
