Uttar Pradesh - How to Obtain a Permanent Driving Licence

Introduction

A Driving Licence is an official document certifying that the holder is suitably qualified to drive a motor vehicle. Under the provisions of the  Motor Vehicles Act,1988 in India, no person can drive a motor vehicle in any public place unless he holds a valid Driving Licence issued to him, authorising him to drive a vehicle of that particular category.

Eligibility

  • The minimum age to apply for a permanent licence to drive a private motor vehicle is 18 years.
  • You should have a valid learner’s licence.
  • You should apply after 30 days and within 180 days from the date of issuance of learner’s licence.
  • A person who is at least 20 years old and possesses a Learner’s License can obtain a Licence for driving a commercial vehicle. Also, one has to be conversant with the traffic rules and regulations in all the cases.

Procedure

For obtaining a Permanent Licence, you must have a valid Learner’s Licence, and must apply after 30 days and within 180 days of issue of the Learner’s Licence. You should be conversant about vehicle systems, driving, traffic rules regulations. You will be put through a driving test, for which you must bring a vehicle with you. On passing the test, you will be issued a Permanent Driving Licence.

Required Documents

For a permanent driving licence one has to apply before the licensing authority, along with the following documents:

  • Application in Form No. 4.
  • Learner’s licence.
  • Three copies of passport sized photographs.
  • Driving certificate in form-5 issued by an approved training school (Compulsory for Transport Vehicle License).
  • Fee as specified in Rule-81.
  • Remember to bring your original documents along with the above.

Fees

Fee of Rs.200/- is charged.

Validity

A Driving License for a private vehicle is valid up to a period of 20 yrs or an age of 50 yrs whichever is experienced earlier. But, a commercial Driving License is valid up to three years.

Processing Time

After completion of Driving test, the Licence will be issued on the same day or within a weeks time.
