New Delhi - How to Obtain an International Driving Licence

Introduction

A Driving Licence is an official document certifying that the holder is suitably qualified to drive a motor vehicle. No person can drive a motor vehicle in any public place unless he holds a valid Driving Licence issued to him, authorising him to drive a vehicle of that particular category.

An International Driving Permit is a permit given to existing driver’s license holders if he/she wishes to travel abroad and drive there. It is only issued by Government of that country of which the applicant is a citizen.

Person having valid Indian Driving licence can apply the service.

Instructions

The standards for the International Driver's License were defined by the United Nations Conference on Road Traffic, Final Act held in the year 1968. According to this law, the International Driver's License is defined mainly as a document:

  • That states the main information contained in the Original Driver's License in English.
  • That has the photo and signature (or thumbprint) of the owner of the vehicle.
  • That states the categories of vehicles for which the Original Driver's License is valid.
  • That states the restrictive conditions of driving and terms of disqualifications.

International Driver's License consists of two parts. The first part consists of a booklet which states all the standards approved by the latest UN convention and a plastic identity card. The genuineness of the information on the plastic card is ascertained by the presence of a hologram.

Procedure

  • The motor licensing authority also issues International Driving Licence to the citizens of India.
  • Application for the International Driving Licence can be made to the licensing authority having jurisdiction over the area in which the holder of the driving licence ordinarily resides or carries on business, along with relevant documents.
  • Citizens of India may drive in foreign countries with an International Driving Licence, which has the maximum validity of one year.
  • Citizens are required to get their licence from the country they're visiting within one year period.

Required Documents

Following documents are to be produced at the time of applying for an International Driving Permit
  • 3 recent passport sized photos.
  • A valid permanent driver’s license with validity beyond 1 year. If your license is going to expire in less than a year, you will have to get in renewed and then apply for the IDP.
  • A valid passport which expires only a year later.
  • A valid visa to the country you are going to visit.
  • Air Tickets (Optional) but if you have it is advisable to present it.
  • IDP Fee of Rs. 1000/- (to be payable at Cash Counter).
  • Form IDP(International Driving Permit).
  • Health certificate by a medical practitioner.

Fees

Rs. 1000/- payable in cash counter

Validity

The validity of this permit is for one year. You are required to get your licence from the country your visiting within one year period

Processing time

Processing time is one day to a maximum of 3 days from the time of submission of the application. If you go well before the time of closing which is 3 pm in most offices then the IDP may be issued on the same day.
